Story of Paul appealing to Caesar is found in the New Testament of the Bible, particularly in the book of Acts, chapter 25 and 26.
Paul, a prominent figure in the early Christian church, was arrested in Jerusalem and subsequently brought to trial before the Roman governor, Felix. After two years of being held in custody, Felix was succeeded by Porcius Festus as governor.
Festus arrived in Jerusalem and, within three days, went up to Caesarea. The chief priests and Jewish leaders brought charges against Paul, seeking his condemnation.
When Paul was given the opportunity to defend himself, he asserted his innocence, stating that he had not violated any Jewish laws or the laws of the Roman Empire.
Knowing that he would not receive a fair trial if he returned to Jerusalem, where the Jewish leaders sought his death, Paul exercised his right as a Roman citizen to appeal his case to Caesar. He said, “I appeal to Caesar!”
Festus, not fully understanding the charges against Paul, consulted King Agrippa and his sister Bernice, who were visiting Caesarea. Agrippa expressed interest in hearing Paul’s case.
Paul was brought before King Agrippa and his entourage. He recounted his background as a devout Jew and his conversion to Christianity on the road to Damascus. Paul explained how he was called by Jesus to preach the gospel to both Jews and Gentiles, and how he endured persecution for his faith. He emphasized that his message was in line with the teachings of the Jewish prophets and the scriptures.
King Agrippa, after hearing Paul’s defense, concluded that Paul could have been set free if he had not appealed to Caesar. However, since Paul had made his appeal, he would be sent to Rome to stand trial before Caesar himself.
Paul’s appeal to Caesar fulfilled a divine purpose, as it provided him with the opportunity to preach the gospel in Rome, the heart of the Roman Empire. This event also demonstrated Paul’s determination to spread the message of Christianity, even in the face of persecution and imprisonment.
