The Challenge: Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, along with 250 other prominent leaders, challenged the leadership and authority of Moses and his brother Aaron, who was the High Priest. The Earth Swallows Them: As the people moved back, the ground beneath Korah, Dathan, and Abiram split open, and they, along with their families, possessions, and all their followers, were swallowed up by the earth. This was a divine judgment upon their rebellion.
The Censers: As a sign of God’s choice of Aaron and his descendants as the priests, Moses instructed Eleazar, Aaron’s son, to collect the censers of the rebels and hammer them into plates to cover the altar. This served as a reminder to the people that only Aaron and his descendants were to serve as priests.
Confirmation of Aaron’s Priesthood: To further affirm Aaron’s priesthood, God commanded Moses to have each tribe bring a staff with the name of their tribal leader written on it. The staff of the tribe of Levi, representing Aaron, miraculously budded and produced almonds, indicating God’s chosen priesthood.
