The narrative unfolds in several stages across the books of 1 Samuel and 2 Samuel, with key events shaping David’s rise to the throne.

The story begins when God rejects Saul as king due to his disobedience (1 Samuel 15). God then instructs the prophet Samuel to anoint a new king from the sons of Jesse, a man from Bethlehem. Samuel goes to Jesse’s house, and after seeing his older sons, God tells him that He does not look at outward appearance but at the heart.

David, the youngest son, who is out tending sheep, is finally brought before Samuel. God tells Samuel that David is the chosen one, and Samuel anoints David in the presence of his brothers. From that day on, the Spirit of the Lord comes powerfully upon David, although he does not immediately become king.

David’s rise to prominence begins when he defeats the giant Goliath, a Philistine warrior who had been terrorizing the Israelites. David, armed only with a sling and his faith in God, strikes down Goliath with a single stone, leading to a great victory for Israel (1 Samuel 17). This act of bravery earns him widespread admiration.

King Saul brings David into his service, and David becomes a successful military leader. However, Saul becomes jealous of David’s growing popularity, as the people praise David more than Saul. This jealousy eventually leads to Saul attempting to kill David on multiple occasions.

For many years, David lives as a fugitive, fleeing from Saul’s attempts to kill him. Despite having opportunities to kill Saul, David refuses to harm the Lord’s anointed king, showing his deep respect for God’s will. During this time, David builds a loyal following and becomes a leader among those discontented with Saul’s reign.

Eventually, Saul and his son Jonathan, David’s close friend, die in a battle against the Philistines at Mount Gilboa (1 Samuel 31). With Saul’s death, the door is opened for David to ascend to the throne.

After Saul’s death, David inquires of the Lord whether he should go up to any of the cities of Judah. God directs David to Hebron, where the men of Judah anoint him as king over the tribe of Judah. This marks the beginning of David’s kingship, but at this point, he is only the king of one tribe.

Meanwhile, Abner, the commander of Saul’s army, makes Saul’s son Ish-bosheth king over the northern tribes of Israel. This leads to a period of conflict between the house of David and the house of Saul.

After a long war between the house of Saul and the house of David, Abner defects to David’s side, and Ish-bosheth is eventually assassinated. With no rival to the throne, the elders of Israel come to David at Hebron and acknowledge him as their king. They remind David that, even during Saul’s reign, it was David who led Israel in battle, and they recognize God’s promise that David would shepherd His people and become their ruler.

At the age of 30, David is anointed king over all Israel (2 Samuel 5:1-3). David then moves his capital from Hebron to Jerusalem, which he captures from the Jebusites and makes it the political and religious center of Israel.

David’s reign is marked by military victories, the unification of the tribes of Israel, and the establishment of Jerusalem as the nation’s capital. David desires to build a temple for the Lord, but God tells him that his son will build it instead. Instead, God makes a covenant with David, promising that his descendants will rule Israel forever, establishing David’s dynasty and foretelling the coming of the Messiah, who would come from David’s lineage (2 Samuel 7:12-16).

David’s journey to becoming king over Israel is a story of faith, patience, and God’s divine plan. Despite the many challenges and obstacles he faced, David trusted in God’s timing and ultimately became the greatest king in Israel’s history. His reign brought unity to the nation and established the royal line from which Jesus, the Messiah, would one day come.
