As they were eating, Jesus took bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, “Take and eat; this is My body” (Matthew 26:26). Then, He took a cup of wine, gave thanks, and passed it to them, saying, “Drink from it, all of you. This is My blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins” (Matthew 26:27-28).
The cup of wine symbolizes the new covenant between God and humanity, established through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross. His blood, represented by the wine, would be shed to atone for the sins of the world. By sharing the cup, Jesus was not only instituting a new ritual—what Christians now call the Eucharist or Communion—but also pointing to His impending death and the salvation it would bring.
Jesus also made a promise during the meal: “I tell you, I will not drink from this fruit of the vine from now on until that day when I drink it new with you in My Father’s kingdom” (Matthew 26:29). This statement pointed to the future, to the Messianic banquet in the Kingdom of God, when He would be reunited with His followers.
After the meal, Jesus and His disciples went to the Mount of Olives, where He would later be arrested, leading to His crucifixion. The Last Supper remains a foundational event in Christianity, commemorated by believers in Communion services as a reminder of Jesus’ sacrifice and His call for unity and fellowship among His followers.
