Story of the Wise Men visiting Jesus, often referred to as the “Three Wise Men” or “Magi,” is a significant event in the Christian tradition, celebrated during the Feast of Epiphany.

According to the Gospel of Matthew, wise men (Magi) from the East saw a star that signaled the birth of a new king. These wise men were scholars and astrologers who interpreted celestial events as significant omens. They followed the star, which they believed would lead them to the newborn king.

The Wise Men traveled to Jerusalem, where they inquired about the location of the newborn king. Their arrival caused a stir in the city, as King Herod was troubled by the news of another potential king.

Herod, feeling threatened by the prospect of a new king, summoned the chief priests and scribes to inquire where the Messiah was to be born. They informed him that the Messiah would be born in Bethlehem, based on the prophecy from Micah 5:2.

Herod secretly met with the Wise Men and asked them to report back to him once they had found the child, claiming he wanted to worship Him too. The Wise Men continued their journey, guided by the star which led them to Bethlehem.

The Wise Men found Jesus in a house with Mary, His mother. They presented Him with gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh. These gifts are often interpreted symbolically: gold representing Jesus’ kingship, frankincense symbolizing His divinity, and myrrh indicating His suffering and death.

After visiting Jesus, the Wise Men were warned in a dream not to return to Herod. They took a different route back to their own country to avoid revealing the location of Jesus.

Infuriated by the Wise Men’s departure and the failure to locate Jesus, Herod ordered the massacre of all male infants under the age of two in Bethlehem, an event known as the Massacre of the Innocents.

The visit of the Wise Men is significant because it demonstrates that Jesus was recognized as the Messiah by people from outside the Jewish community, symbolizing the universal recognition of Jesus as the Savior.

The story fulfills Old Testament prophecies about the coming of a great king and highlights the divine guidance provided through the star.

The Feast of Epiphany, celebrated on January 6, commemorates the arrival of the Wise Men and the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles.

The story emphasizes the themes of revelation, divine guidance, and the acknowledgment of Jesus’ significance by different cultures and peoples.
